Growing up I was always scared to show my true self. I was scared that someone would “out” me to the world at any opportunity. I was not comfortable in my own skin so I hid. I hid from my family, my friends, the people closest to me. I feared rejection and exclusion and thought that if I told my truth that I would be shunned. I’ve recently come to realize that people deserve to see my true and authentic self. That they embrace me and everything that I am, no matter who I love. While some still don’t understand me and my life, there are so many more that love me for who I am and what I stand for. This is why this year and this month I have come out to the world and now wear my pride on my sleeve (literally).
What better way to show my pride this year than to wear it! Bonobos has recently introduced a killer line of socks that unabashedly celebrate who we are as people in this community. Bonobos has partnered with Pride Media and donated proceeds to the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center based in New York City which provides services and health care to the LGBTQ+ community in the city regardless of your financial situation.
The crew socks I chose outrightly and unwavering states what it is what it stands for. “THIS IS A GAY SOCK” right across the ankle shows people that I am unafraid to share my sexuality with the world and that I am a proud gay man. There are also two other pairs of pride socks in the collection that have a similar message. The grey crew socks with the rainbow stripe and the sneakers socks with the message “HIDE YOUR SOCKS NOT YOURSELF.”
I decided to pair the sock with a simple pair of white stretch washed chino shorts and a relaxed fit camp collar shirt in floral. With Bonobos shorts you can actually choose your preferred waist AND even length. I usually tend to go for a shorter short (5 inch) and most companies only have 7 and 9 inch inseams. I wanted the socks to speak for themselves and be the powerful message of the outfit so I chose a simpler look than I normally would. The socks needs to be the main focus because that is the message I need to send.
